Problem Description
Genital warts are caused by a virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is easily passed from one person to another through sexual contact.
Warts can be external or internal. In women, warts can appear on or in the vagina, vulva, cervix, or around the anus. In men, warts can appear on or around the penis, scrotum, and urethra, and around the anus. You can get the virus if you have vaginal or anal sex, or if you share sex toys. It is possible to get warts on your mouth or lips after oral sex, although this is uncommon. It can take two weeks to several months for warts to appear after exposure to the virus. If you have visible warts, you may notice small or larger growths, bumps, lumps, or cauliflower-shaped growths that appear anywhere in the genital or anal area.
How can genital warts be removed?
If you have symptoms of genital warts, you should see a doctor. If your doctor confirms the diagnosis, there are several possible treatments.
1. Using creams or solutions – these are applied directly to the warts, and these types of creams are available only with a prescription.
2. Surgical removal of genital warts – Various approaches can be used to remove warts, such as removal with liquid nitrogen, freezing, or cauterization with an electric current, but these methods are not always effective.
