Balanitis is the inflammation of foreskin and the tissues around the head of the penis. There is two types: acute (short term) or chronic (long term). The most common causes of acute balanitis is poor hygiene, unprotected sex or diabetes. If the inflammation is prolonged or recurrent it is termed chronic. In chronic balanitis the skin on the foreskin can become thickened due to formation of scar tissue. This thickening and scar tissue will eventually lead to tightening and phimosis.
