Erectile dysfunction (disturbance of erection)
is insufficient or totally missing erection of penis, which makes difficult or impossible to have sexual intercourse. Erectile disorder can be caused by a physical disease (in 80% of cases) or may be psychogenic (in 20% of cases). Any disease that damages the nervous and vascular system can also damage the ability of penile erection. The most common are diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, conditions after colon and prostate surgery, conditions after spinal cord injuries, severe kidney diseases, depressions. Erectile ability may be impaired by smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs. In diagnostics, we focus on a comprehensive assessment of the health status of a man with a focus on eliminating diseases that can condition erectile dysfunction, sexual hormone levels and assessment of the condition of prostate and vascular system.
In first-line treatment of erectile dysfunction are applied drugs used in the form of tablets or gels. These are medicines containing sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil or avanafil or prostaglandins. In the case of their ineffectiveness or weakness, second-line drugs are used.
In the second line are injections that are injected into the penile corpora cavernosa. These are medications that provide sufficient blood flow to penile corpora cavernosa, which will then provide a sufficiently stiff erection for penetration. The patient will learn how to apply the injection at the visit.
The last option for treating erectile dysfunctions is penile prosthesis implantation.
